Welcome to ARC2018: Achieving Resilient Cities & Communities

09th & 10th October 2018

“A workshop not a talkshop”

This is the first in a series of one-day conferences and workshops jointly hosted by DTC Research Group together with EWB Ireland and Habitat for Humanity.

These events are part of the European Union (EU) development education and awareness raising (DEAR) program (EuropeAid/151103/DH/ACT/Multi) and the “Build Solid Ground Campaign” which aims to inform and actively engage EU citizens in actions towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Resilient Cities & Communities

The cities and communities of the 21st Century face huge challenges in coping with climate change, energy demands, water and wastewater supply together with food and health considerations.

Nature Based Solutions (NBS) are both natural and constructed systems which utilise physical, chemical and microbiological treatment processes. The conference series will feature a number of interational experts who will present NBS case studies from across Europe followed by a number of interactive workshops. The outputs from these workshops will be a NBS ToolKIT which will present a portfolio of NBS technologies, show where they are applicable, and will equip the user with the skills to promote the inclusion of NBS technologies in their day to day work.

Day 1: Cities – Tuesday 9th October

Day 1 is aimed at Builders, Engineers, Architects, Urban Planners, Designers and related industries. It will feature presentations by European experts and by DIT personnel on the design, installation and application of various NBS technologies. The participants will then split into workshops, mentored by the experts and will design a NBS scheme in conjunction with them. This scheme will be based on a real life situation. Finally day 1 will finish with a presentation by the workshop groups of their scheme designs.

Day 2: Communities – Wednesday 10th October

‌Day 2 is aimed at the community worker/activist and the development worker. It will focus on the applications of NBS technology and how these technologies can be used to reinforce community structures and empower communities to address their own problems and produce solutions. The development worker will also benefit from the applications of various NBS technologies. Day 2 will also feature a similar structure to day 1 with presentations in the morning by the European experts and DIT personnel followed by a workshop format in the afternoon.

Community activists and development workers will also benefit from attending the conference. The emphasis on Day 2 is on non-specialist understanding of NBS and the opportunity of using NBS technology to empower and reinforce community action and community values.
